Railway Medicals (CAT 1, 2, 3)
Designed to ensure the safety of all rail workers, this medical assessment is a key component of the legislation requiring every rail transport operator to maintain and implement a health and fitness management program for their workforce.
Dr Muhammad Zaman is authorised to conduct rail health assessments. All rail workers and prospective employees are assessed in accordance with the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers 2024, as published by the National Transport Commission
Periodic health assessments are undertaken to proactively identify any medical conditions that may impact a worker’s capacity to safely carry out rail safety duties. These assessments are structured into three distinct categories to ensure that all rail personnel meet the health requirements appropriate to their level of responsibility and risk exposure.
Category 1 and 2 – Safety Critical Workers
Health assessments are required at commencement, followed by:
- Every 5 years until the age of 50
- Every 2 years until the age of 60
- Annually thereafter
Category 3 – Around-the-Track Personnel (Uncontrolled Environment)
Health assessments are required at commencement, followed by:
- At 40 years of age
- Every 5 years thereafter
All workers classified within Categories 1, 2, and 3 must complete a health assessment prior to commencing employment and before transitioning into any role with a higher risk classification.
These assessments ensure each worker is medically fit to perform the inherent requirements and operational demands of their designated rail safety position, with each assessment tailored to the specific risk category of the role.
Rail transport operators may also choose to introduce more frequent assessments where operational needs or risk considerations warrant additional monitoring.
